Introduction:
I had the very fortunate opportunity to be contacted by a woman who grew up with her family in American Canyon during the mid 1900's a while back. It turns out, that her mother, Pearl Towle, documented our city between 1952 and 1960, and even wrote newspaper articles for the local papers at the time. This mothers day, we would like to dedicate this article solely to her, her efforts in our community, and the wealth of information she has attained about our city at the time.
About Pearl Towle:
Towle was one of the first pioneers to move into American Canyon in the mid 1900's, raising five children, and tirelessly working for the good of the community through her grassroots political actions. She made twenty cents per article writing weekly for local newspapers, which covered everything from the growing community of American Canyon (known as Napa Junction at the time, but was later named American Canyon by settlers to distinguish the land from the native Indians), to its surrounding areas. She, as well as her husband, "were instrumental in the establishment of the fire department, the post office, the church, the school, the sanitation department, the library, as well as bringing in activities like the Cub Scouts, Camp Fire Girls, and the 4-H club", says Susan Ghandehari, daughter of Towle. "She also wrote letters to businesses, public commissions and political office holders to gain support for various efforts of the community", she added. Being one of the first people to move into AmCan, they built their own house right on Andrew Road. Today, she has passed, but her memory will forever be saved in her work for the community, and the words she wrote to describe our city at the time.
American Canyon Historical Society:
The Chamber of Commerce has obtained everything that Towle left behind, donated by her daughter and her family. These eight huge binders will be the beginning of the American Canyon Historical Society which will mostly likely be a new addition to the American Canyon Library. "I hope that we can inspire others to dig through their closets and part with those old mementos and donate them to the cause", says Towle. "This is my first Mother’s Day without my mom, and I feel this is a fitting tribute to her. She worked tirelessly for the good of the community and would love to know that through her efforts have paid off for the community she loved and that all of her “old stuff” has finally found a home".
Newspapers Written By Towle:
